Sony’s Rolly (Polly???)

My first thought when I saw its picture was how cute this gadget is! Isn’t it a cutie? But I bet you won’t know what it is at first glance. Right? It just looks like a preschooler’s plaything but it’s actually an mp3 player. Surprised? I bet not. We’re all used to Sony’s many interesting creations. I don’t know which one this gadget resembles. Is it an egg or a curled up rolly polly? Either way, I’d love to have one of these.

However, to be able to use it you would have to have an OC with Japanese language capabilities. And even then, for obvious reasons, you would need to understand Japanese. Because it only has 1GB memory, streaming songs through your computer would be ideal and you can do it through the Rolly’s built-in Bluetooth. The Rolly offers decent sound quality despite its quirky features. Other than its main purpose, however, the Rolly could also entertain while you listen. The reflectors which look like ears at the flanks of the device rotate and the whole gadget itself could roll around the room while it cranks out music. Cool.

The reason why I’m not too hot about it is because it costs $399. Sure it rolls around the room, but for $399, I could get a snazzier-looking mp3 player. And besides, you’d need to have a Japanese-enabled OS (and have to be able to read the language too or else you’ll be blindly operating the system). My verdict? It’s cute enough but unless you have this mad desire to get your hands on one, it’s better to go for something else more practical. And I don’t think anyone would start studying Japanese just to be able to use it. Still, if you have the extra dough, this little cutie’s right at the top of my list.
