New Gadget for Skin Cancer Treatment

Let’s veer the focus for a while and instead of discussing gadgets for us geeks, let’s discuss gadgets which will benefit humankind. I think it’ll be good if more of these types would be invented soon. Sure, it’s nice seeing sleek new phones and mp4 players, but these types of gadgets restore my faith in humanity. Anyhow, a new kind of gadget has been invented recently for skin cancer treatment. The medical gadget, which is portable and handy, was developed at the University Belfast in Queens, Ireland.

The original device is actually derived from insulin-applicating devices by Desmond Morrow a student of Doctor of Pharmacy and Medical Biology Centre in Queens’ Ryan Donnelly and Paul McCarron. This is in light of recent findings that skin cancer is currently THE most common type of cancer in the US alone. What of the world? How many more people do you think is afflicted by the ailment?

Back to the gadget. Now this gadget is loaded with a liquid solution containing a certain agent which is commonly used by for skin cancer patients called PDT or photodynamic therapy. The solution inside the gadget is released as a high pressure liquid which could penetrate anything between 1 and 3 millimeters of human skin. You know what this means? It means goodbye syringes.

The limitation of this gadget, however, lies in the fact that it can’t be used for skin cancers which have already caused large scars on one’s skin. And also, the high-pressure jet of liquid could scar you, so facial use is not ideal. Still, for those in the developing stages and for other parts of the body, this will really be useful. The effects observed after using this gadget, of course, differ from person to person depending on the level of drug penetration. Let’s hope that it improves over time and develops into something more powerful for those who need it the most.
